Walk alongside us as we explore Harbor House Arboretum.
This historic property, with beautiful views of Narragansett bay and the Pell bridge, currently serves as an affordable homestead for senior citizens. The grounds hold a number of beautiful specimen trees, notably an impressive horserchestnut tree, a towering London Planetree, and the summer flowering Japanese Scholar Tree. For this arboretum public day event, we will tour the grounds, discusss some of the notable plants, and finish with a pruning demostration of two stewartia trees. Stewartia, one of the most beautiful ornamental flowering trees available to northeastern gardens, is often left unpruned, which hinders the tree's aesthetic. NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig will discuss the approach to pruning, perform a series of cuts, and discuss cultivating the beautiful stewartia in detail.
