Walk alongside us as we explore Harbor House Arboretum.

Family Fun with the Newport Tree Conservancy: Aquidneck Park
Bring the family and join us for a summer series exploring Newport’s local parks!
NTC is thrilled to announce three family tree walks this summer! During each session, we will explore the trees at the park, discover how they benefit us and other living things, and uncover other fascinating finds along the way. Throughout the series, participants will create their own field guides using leaf and bark rubbings. Those attending multiple programs will have the chance to compile their illustrations into a personalized field guide booklet! The aim is for families to use these homemade guides for future tree-spotting adventures.
Each program costs $5 per family. Families facing financial challenges with this fee are encouraged to reach out to us for assistance. We recommend children be at least 4 years old to fully enjoy the activities. To ensure a quality experience, each session will accommodate a maximum of 25 participants (including adults and children). Please indicate the number of adults and children when registering.
Parking: Local street parking available. Additional parking available at Bellevue Gardens shopping center (2 hours free with validation).
Meeting Location: Aquidneck Park playground

Volunteer Event: Tree Corps Aquidneck Park
Join us as a Tree Corps volunteer by helping to plant care for young trees in Aquidneck Park!
Please join us in helping care for the beech collection at Aquidneck Park.
The park, which contains nearly 40 beech trees representing 8 different cultivars, is a beautiful and relaxing open space in the heart of Newport. Several majestic trees have come down in the park over the last several years, and shade is at a premium.
Starting in 2022, many of the beech trees located in the park became infected with a new and destructive pathogen, known commonly as Beech Leaf Disease. The problematic culprit behind this issue is a microscopic nematode (Litylenchus crenate subsp. mccannii) that causes foliage abnormalities, eventually progressing to the tree failing to leaf out, leading to fatality.
Beeches that are growing vigorously under favorable conditions will handle the nematode better than stressed trees. That is where the people come in. In 2022, NTC staff and volunteers put forth a grand effort to provide each beech tree in Aquidneck Park with a large mulch circle. The mulch is helpful for a variety of reasons: It keeps the soil moist and cool, suppresses weeds, provides for food for the soil, and nutrients for the tree as the mulch breaks down.
We are seeing the benefits of this mulching effort in 2024, with the beeches looking happier with more complete leaf formation than we saw in 2023. But now, the trees are in need of a fresh layer of mulch. Please help us continue to give these trees the proper love and care to preserve them in this iconic park by volunteering with our Tree Corps program.

August Free Tree Walk: Ballard Park
Join Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig as we explore shaded trails through the dense woodlands of Ballard Park.
Many interesting plants exist within the confines of the park, including several Aquidneck Island native trees, naturalized plants introduced into Newport through horticulture or by accident, and a fair share of exotic invasives as well. Joe will discuss some tree identification, the history of Newport’s horticulture, and the effect it has had on native ecosystems such as Ballard Park, and remark on many beautiful specimens we’ll see from the trail.
Parking: Rogers High School lot at 15 Wickham Rd
Meeting Location: Ballard Park map kiosk on Wickham Rd
Registration is required and will open on July 20, 2024.
This program involves walking/standing for the duration of the event.
Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

Free educational program ~ The Iconic Trees of Newport: Past, Present & Future
Newport is known for its outstanding specimen trees and verdant landscapes. In recent years there has been a marked increase in tree mortality in Newport’s many arboretums, especially among beech trees. The culprit has been identified as beech leaf disease, a chronic infestation that weakens and eventually kills affected trees.
Impressive specimen trees are essential to Newport’s character and their loss threatens the city’s reputation as the “Eden of America.” This forum will explore Newport’s landscape history, the cause and treatment of Beech Leaf Disease and strategies for proactive tree planting to ensure a green future.
