Preserving Newport’s
Iconic Beech Trees
A Citywide Awareness Initiative for a Healthier Tree Canopy
THE THREAT
Beech Trees in crisis:
Newport’s beloved Beech trees—some over 100 years old—are facing a fast-moving threat:
Beech Leaf Disease (BLD), a condition caused by a microscopic nematode, damages leaves, reduces canopy health, and can ultimately kill even the strongest trees within just a few years.
These trees are more than greenery—they are historic symbols of Newport’s character, framing our streets, parks, and cultural sites.
WHO’S INVOLVED
A United Effort to Protect Newport’s Canopy:
In response to this growing threat, Newport’s leading civic, academic, and preservation organizations have come together in a shared awareness campaign. Our goal: educate the public, protect historic trees, and promote a healthy, resilient canopy for generations to come.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
How you can help:
While treatment options are advancing, community awareness is the most powerful tool we have right now. By learning how to recognize Beech Leaf Disease and sharing this knowledge with others, you can help protect Newport’s urban forest.
Signs of Beech Leaf Disease
Dark green striping between leaf veins
Thickened, curled, or leathery leaves
Sparse or thinning canopies
Premature leaf drop
